Glycine ,Aminoacetic acid, abbreviated as Gly or G, is the smallest molecular weight of the 20 protein amino acids. It is white or light yellow crystals, soluble in water, sweet. The side bond of glycine is a hydrogen atom. Since its alpha carbon also has a hydrogen atom, glycine is not optically isomeric. Since the side bonds of glycine are very small, they can occupy other spaces where the amino acids can not be occupied, such as amino acids within the collagen spine.
